Word up, G.

Most people who’ve been on Splice for a while are acquainted with our very own JDubb. He was one of our earliest users, and certainly one of our most active users, so chances are if you were here back in the day, you got some comments from him or heard his work. I have to say that I was especially enjoying watching his music change over time… He just kept getting better and better with each song. We’ve made a million changes to the site since he signed up, but he never lets it slow him down. I’ve never met anyone who will remix a song so many times until they get it just how they want. Not only that, but from the time I first met him until the last time we spoke, I’ve seen him make so many friends here and help THEM out, too. I love seeing things like that - to me, Splice is about making music, sure, but it’s also about using technology to form tighter communities.

It’s late and if you get me started talking about how much I love music AND the internet, we will be here forever. That’s an entire separate post that perhaps I will make tomorrow. The point of this post was how awesome JDubb is. At some point, he kind of disappeared without a trace, and I’ve had many Splicers asking me what ever happened to him. Well, you can all relax - guess who left me a comment tonight? (The fun thing about working here is that you can comandeer the blog to tell the whole world things like who left comments in your page tonight. Neat, huh?) JDubb, of course! He says he’s been getting a new computer and has been offline, but that he will be back soon. He also said to say hello to everyone that’s asked for him.

I think Splice had better look out, because I have a hunch that when JDubb comes back, he will be back with a vengeance. You better get your rhymes ready.

Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music, v2.5 is a highly entertaining read, and a lot of fun to play with. For those of you who are new to electronic music, and for those of you who are not, there is a lot here to chuckle at and then IM to your friends.

I suppose I should warn you that it’s full of bad language, but if you care about such things, you probably shouldn’t hang around with me, either.

Get the skinny.

It’s so hard to choose…

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Hello, kiddies.

Well, our Remix Airtone contest officially ended on Sunday night, and I have to tell you something: The entries that were submitted were all SO good that our staff was hard pressed to pick a winner. We have been debating this for two days now and all I can say about that is “What an awesome problem to have!”

Really, though - the quality of the music we got this week was above and beyond anything we’ve done so far, and I am extra impressed with everyone who entered the contest. You guys rock! One of my favorite things about my job here is that I’m never quite sure what I’m going to hear when I push Play, and this week was one pleasant surprise after another.

Anyway, without further ado, our winner:

Like I said, it was tough to choose, but we went with TallTechson because we really loved the mix of a live track set to a Splice base. That’s what Splice is really all about - taking the things you find here and enhancing them with your own personal style. We were extra happy to see this, and so we’re thrilled to be sending him that swank set of Altec Lansing Wireless Headphones. After all, we’ve yet to meet a musician who couldn’t do with a few more toys in their gearbox.

But don’t miss the other entries in this contest! I’m not lying when I say that they were ALL excellent. You can see all of the entries by searching for remixairtone.

And of course, let’s not forget to thank the person who REALLY made this all possible: AIRTONE! There is actually another lovely song here that you should listen to, and I will leave you with that and a reminder that we do have a contest here every week. I think the next one is going to be as good at this one was, and I am very excited about it. Join us!!

Weekly Contest: Remix Petrol!

Remix Petrol

Our contests have been going strong, with lots of great entries and some very happy winners. This week, we’re going to remix Petrol, and I’m especially excited about this. If you haven’t been to his profile before, go take a listen to the sounds there. They’re beautiful! The vocal ones are especially lovely.

Once again, we are giving away a great prize from Altec Lansing. This week, it’s the inMotion9 portable speaker system for your ipod. It’s cool - not only will you be able to listen without headphones, you’ll be able to do it anywhere, as this unit is made for portability. You can even run it on batteries if you like!

The rules will be the same as last week, but let me tell you again:

1. You must use three of Petrol’s sounds in your song.
2. Your song must be sequenced in Splice.
3. Tag your song with remixpetrol to be automatically entered in the contest.
4. The deadline for submissions is midnight, Central Standard Time, on Sunday, February 25th, 2007.

The Splice staff will vote on the best song and announce the winner next Monday. That gives you seven days to make your masterpiece.

Ready? Set? Remix!

Speaking of revolutions…

Sunday, February 18th, 2007

I’ve been waiting to see if Texture was going to fill in the gaps on this great song he’s got going, but you know, unfinished songs are one of the best things about Splice, so we’re going to go ahead and blog it anyway. He’s got some other parts listed in there that weren’t actually used, so maybe this is a prime time for some of you to go in there and round it out.

Tip of the day:

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Did you know you can put Splice songs in your favorite mp3 player? You can save an MP3 of any sound or song you like just by right clicking it’s MP3 button and picking “Save Target As…” or “Save Link As”. (If you’re a Mac kid, it’s Apple + click.) Take the music with you!

Remix Airtone!

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

remix airtone

You probably remember the awesome song I posted here by airtone not too long ago. Well, we’ve decided to up the ante and we’re going to remix him for this week’s contest. His profile has 83 lusciously mellow sounds to choose from, so you’re sure to find something that strikes your fancy.

The rules are:
1. You must use three of airtone’s sounds in your song.
2. The song must be sequenced in Splice.
3. Tag your finished song with remixairtone to enter. Entries are due by midnight on Sunday, February 18th.

Quality counts! The winner will be judged by Splice staff this time around, so see what you can do to impress us. If you do, you can take home your very own set of Altec Lansing AHP612 Wireless Studio Headphones and rock out without getting tangled up. Awesome!

Splice is Nice Winner

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

The contest was a little quiet this week, but our winner still astounded us. Tyf took fartlord’s mix and really did a number on it. And, now that I’ve explained it to him a bit, he’s agreed to take the parts for this number and load them back into Splice so that all of you can actually remix it. This should make everyone happy.

Really though - listen!

Nice! Thanks again to Fartlord for being such a great sport in this, and thanks once again to Altec Lansing for providing us with a great prize!!

“But I don’t have an instrument!”

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

Want to see something fun? This is my response to everyone who says they can’t make some beats because they have nothing to play. If you’re creative, EVERYTHING makes music, as evidenced here in this clip, entitled Music for One Apartment and Six Drummers (might take it a moment to load, it’s a bit long):

If someone ever threw a party in my apartment like this and didn’t invite me, I would be SO MAD.
