Judging by the happy squealing mail in my inbox, SOME of you have noticed our latest improvement to the sequencer. In case you were not one of those people, I’m here to let you know we’ve added four more tracks! So go ahead - take that old song out, dust it off, and add that ONE LAST SOUND that you knew it needed to make it perfect. We know you’ve been waiting.

Listen up!

Thaumata here, popping in with a couple of songs I know you’ll enjoy. First up, binnn has been putting up some great sounds from Brasil. Check out this one:

And we’re trying hard not to sway our election here, but we’ve got to give recognition where it’s due. If you haven’t heard this number from groovebox, you haven’t heard anything yet. It’s quickly become a staff favorite. We think you’ll hear why:

Go say hello to these guys and tell them what you think!

We’ve got a CC License and a Microphone.

Beck @ Yahoo Hackday by Malavagma

Even though the mashup sensibility has become something of a cliché, I’d love to put out an album that you could edit and mix and layer directly in iTunes. We did a remix project on a Web site a few years back where we put up the tracks to a song and let people make their own versions. There was something really inspiring about the variety and quality of the music that people gave back. In an ideal world, I’d find a way to let people truly interact with the records I put out – not just remix the songs, but maybe play them like a videogame. -Beck

Does that sound familiar and delightful? We thought so. Ladies and gentleman, in case you missed it, Beck graced the cover of Wired magazine last month, when they ran a GREAT article about the way music is changing to allow fans to get more involved and interact with their favorite artists. Interviewed by Eric Steuer over at Creative Commons, this conversation is certainly worth checking out.

Some of us at Splice were lucky enough to catch a great show by Beck at Yahoo’s Hackday recently, and we made sure to let them know how much we love to hear them supporting this kind of collaboration, but perhaps you’ve got something to say about it. How would you feel about having one of your favorite artists open up their work on a site like Splice to allow you to remix it and do it up your way? Who would you love to remix?

With all the songs being made every day here, it might be easy to miss some of the best we’ve got to offer. Lucky for you, we’re not going to let that happen!

Barcelona resident thatcrooner makes really great songs with just his voice. Try this one, entitled Portishez:

con4cyn, has been bringing us great music from Memphis, for a while now and never fails to disappoint. Try Ethereal, one of her newest songs, on for size:

And last, but certainly not least, we bring you the infamous fartlord, who is out to win a Grammy with his new Splice hit, Rod’s Mom Didn’t Say That (Grammy Award Mix):

Hey man, we’re rooting for you!

If you’re new to the world of Creative Commons, we would love to introduce you to this fantastic video, which talks about the idea of CC, sampling licenses and how Brazilian artist Gilberto Gil has begun promoting this idea and releasing his music for the world to share and participate in.

You can hear “Oslodum” - the song in the video - right here on Splice.

Election Day Contest!

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

It’s that time again, when bloodsuckers and ghastly ghouls lurk around for treats… Election Season! We take our civic duty seriously here at Splice, so we’re hereby announcing our first song competition. Nominate your politically-themed song by tagging it with “electionday06″ and publishing it. The polls close at midnight, Central Standard Time, on November 7, at which time the creator of the highest rated song will be declared the winner and put in charge of a civilization-ending arsenal of nuclear weapons. That last part was a lie, but we will send the winner a new iPod shuffle.

This is a test. :)
