Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Splice is only as great as it’s users, as you know. Occasionally, we have someone who really goes above and beyond in contributing to the site with their music and enthusiasm. We thought it’d be great to start introducing you to them, so how about a big old warm welcome to our first ever featured user, Rig.

Rig is a drummer who comes to us from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He’s been publishing some great music here, which you can check out on his profile page. He’s also really active on our forum, giving friendly advice and making awesome suggestions.

Rig has a TON of great songs on Splice. Here are just a few to get you started:

Dangerously Awesome reviews Splice

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

We’d like to thank Alex Hillman over at dangerouslyawesome.com for giving us a peek and writing us a glowing review:

Y.A.S.W.

You guessed it, that stands for Yet Another Social Website. I stumbled across a very promising social website today, http://www.splicemusic.com/. Splice is doing a number of very cool things. First off, it’s providing a nice pile of sounds and samples…next, its providing a pretty slick multi track mixing console, a-la fruity loops (or a severly dumbed-down version of garage band). Then, once you’ve used all of these toys to mix up a sweet track, it ties in a social networking community for sharing and swapping new tracks. What’s the twist?

Creative Commons.

Motionographer reviews Splice

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

We think one really useful application for Splice is making “safe” soundtracks for all those videos floating around online these days. Seems we aren’t the only ones! Check out this glowing review by Justin at Motionographer.com:

I’ve been a fan of Creative Commons for a while, but I’ve often found it hard to translate its philosophy into practical application. Great video resources like the Prelinger Archive put public domain footage at your fingertips, but I’ve been underwhelmed by the amount and quality of sharable audio content.

Enter Splice. It’s still young, but Splice has real promise. The simplest way to use Splice is to find CC-licensed audio for your mograph projects, but that’s not really anything new.

kbcafe.com interviews Splice’s Wendell Davis III

Friday, September 8th, 2006

We’d like to thank Randy Morin for the lovely interview he did at kbcafe.com with our very own Wendell Davis III:

Splice is an online music publishing community that uses the Creative Commons license to encourage users to share their creations. Today, I’m interviewing Wendell Davis III of Splice.

Q: Wendell, congrats on the release of Splice. Tell my readers more about Splice and your startup company.

Wendell: Thanks Randy. I think the best way to explain Splice right now is through analogy: If you can imagine something like Apple’s GarageBand, but as a web-based application wrapped in a social network (sprinkled with a hearty dash of Creative Commons licensing), you essentially arrive at the genesis of Splice. In essence, we have built a music-focused mashup community, a place where users can create songs that anyone can remix, and sounds that anyone can use. The primary difference between what we are doing and everything that has come before it is that the mixing tools are built-in, and the community is self-contained.

Splice Mixes it Up, MySpace-Style

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Splice has been making headlines again. Check out this great article by Pete Cashmore over at Mashable.com:

Splice, which is currently in beta, is a very cool music remixing community. Combining a social network with a neat mixing tool and a sweet design, it’s one of the most original new sites of the past few weeks. The company has offices in Chicago and Barcelona, and the product has been in development for around 9 months.

MP3 Download!

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

What’s the sense of making all this music if you can’t take it with you, you ask? Well, we agree! We’d like to introduce MP3 downloading of anything you hear on the site. We’ll be adding ID3 tags to them by the end of the week, but if you’d like to try it out now, we would love your feedback!
